Trench Shower Drains: The decision to change

Trench shower drains grew out of an expertise in design of large, linear trench drains used to keep surface water clear. The primary use was in large, outdoor areas such as parks, gardens, commercial buildings—anywhere there is surface water, or easier ADA-compliant access with a level floor. The key benefit of using a trench shower drain is that a drainage barrier is created allowing wet and dry zones to be separated without the need for a physical barrier. ACO is a world leader in trench drainage and has now brought that technology into the design of drains in the bathroom with the QuARTz shower drain.

A new era of trench shower drains has begun

The QuARTz shower drains have one distinctive advantage that you may not even notice: it is unobtrusive but noticeable as a well-designed and unique bathroom fixture. Gone forever is the traditional round shower drain. Traditional drains are old fashioned with an outdated look and they don’t ever need to be part of your fixture consideration again.

Shower installations become much easier with QuARTz

The QuARTz trench shower drains have changed the way showers are installed. The new design and great new look have also opened up ways of arranging and installing showers. The linear trench design is made to fit with tile. No longer do we have to make complicated adjustments to laying the tile just to accommodate a piece of plumbing. Now, the shower drains work with the tile and actually become a natural part of the floor in the shower or other wet zone environment. Even the installation of poured shower pans has changed. See on our website how simple it is to install the QuARTz shower drain.

Installation is simple

The placement of a traditional round drains is dictated by the slope of the floor, usually toward the center of the shower or room. Careful grading has to be done so the water will run the right direction, and then careful tiling has to be done to cut the tile around the circular drain and maintain the 4-way slopes; both rarely work out well first time.

QuARTz trench shower drains make it so much easier. There are actually four main choices for placement of the drain and the choice is primarily because of visual preference or the position of the other plumbing. You can place the drain:

  • Against the wall
  • At the threshold
  • In the center
  • Multiple sites, i.e. opposite walls or entry-exit (walkthrough) threshold positions.

The linear concept enables simple single direction slopes, virtually eliminating any special cutting or adjusting of tiles. The drain itself has a very high flow capacity so it can be used anywhere in the layout. If designing the shower drain as a threshold at the end of the wet zone, it keeps the water out of the dry zone without the need for a door or step as would normally be needed in a shower.

When it is time to clean, that is equally simple. The grate are removable - providing easy access to the drain body and pipework for cleaning. Standard household cleaners or soap is all that is required, such as used on any stainless steel appliance. You can use a soft cloth to dry and buff the surface.

ACO, the world leader and pioneer in landscape and commercial drain applications has, for years, been the innovator in moving surface water off the surface efficiently and with style. Now, with the QuARTz trench shower drains, that know-how and creativity has moved indoors where you can take advantage of it as a homeowner. With such an expression of ease-of-access, style and artistry, and so many varieties of grate designs, you simply have to look at the possibilities and imagine using this cutting-edge technology in your own home.
